A role-playing game is usually set in a pre-determined world or setting and is governed by a formal set of rules. The Games Master (sometimes called the Dungeon Master) provides the premise for the game, normally stipulating the type of setting that the game will take place in (for example Sci-Fi, Steampunk, or Fantasy) and the rules that will be used for the games.
The participants or players then create individual characters; deciding their mannerisms, what they look like, assigning or rolling statistics, choosing their skills and creating their background and then they assume the role of that character within the game.
The Game Master leads the participants into the story and then it unfolds with everyone collaborating to take the story forward, determining the actions of their characters based on how they visualised their characters. Actions succeed or fail according to the rules system that they are working with and are normally facilitated by rolling dice, again the type of dice depends on the rule system that is being used. Each player is encouraged to improvise freely and converse as their characters, discussing options and approaching challenges as their characters would, as their choices shape the direction and outcome of the story.
No matter which system you are using, you should always remember the two main rules of Roleplaying:
It should always be fun and the Games Master’s ruling overrules all other rules
